Divi is a powerful theme from Elegant Themes that includes a drag and drop building system that’s both intuitive and easy to use. It includes lots of modules that can help you create virtually any type of site you can imagine. It’s one of the most popular themes for WordPress and it has an amazing amount of community support.

Who is Divi For?

All levels of WordPress users can benefit by using Divi. You can create websites at any level of development. For example, you can develop your own unique website, use pre-made layouts and child-themes, simply blog, or create your very own web design agency. You don’t have to know how to code, but if you do you can take your websites even further. It doesn’t take that long to learn to use and customize Divi and there’s plenty of help available. Anyone from beginners to advanced users can use Divi.

Divi’s Features

Here’s a quick look at the main features of Divi. We’ll go more in-depth on each of these features in future articles.

There are dozens of Modules that include images, maps, blog, portfolios, sliders, sidebars, toggles, testimonials, text, menus, code, tabs, video, timers, counters, and lots more. You can even place shortcodes from other plugins within code modules, making Divi virtually limitless. You can also customize them to your heart’s content. Each module includes general, advanced, and CSS settings.

Divi Builder

Divi comes with dozens pre-made layouts that you can modify. They include layouts for blogs, home pages, landing pages, projects, portfolios, and much more. You can also create and save your own, and even share them with the community.

There are lots of header options. You can place the menu on top or on the side, choose between several logo locations, determine how the menu reacts to scroll, set opacity, change colors, fonts, sizes, etc.

Divi Leads

Another nice feature, called Divi Leads, allows you to do an a/b split test on your sections, rows, or modules. You can do as many tests as you want and determine which of your designs works the best, getting you the results you want from your call to action. It provides stats to help you make decisions.

Even More Features

Divi is built with quality code and is updated often. It’s responsive so it works perfectly on any screen size. It’s also WPML ready. It’s been translated into 32 languages and includes right-to-left support. Elegant Themes takes security seriously, so it’s no surprise that Divi is secure. It was even awarded the Sucuri Seal for 0 security issues.

Features are added on a regular basis and Elegant Themes listens to their customers and builds features that customers want. If you ever decide you want to move to another theme you can use the Divi Builder plugin to retain your layout.

How It Works

Divi uses a system with Sections, Rows, and Modules. First you place a Section. Next you create rows within that Section. The rows can have from 1 to 4 columns. Next you place modules within the Rows. You can drag and drop every element to create new and unique layouts quickly. Each element can be styled with color, CSS, images, etc., using the General Settings, Advanced Settings, and Custom CSS settings.

Using the Theme Customizer you can adjust colors, fonts, sizes, widths, headers, etc., to make a website that’s uniquely yours. If you already have branded colors you can match them easily. You can also make key decisions about your website in the customizer, such as which page to use as your home page.

Child Themes

Of course you might choose to simply post your content as a regular blog post and only use the Divi builder to create your layout. That’s perfectly fine. In fact, you don’t even have to develop the layout. Simply buy a child theme and start blogging.

One of the advantages of Divi’s building system is you don’t have to build your layout yourself. You can buy child themes to install onto your Divi platform and then start working on your content. This gives you the advantage of getting started faster, having a professional design, and you still get to use the Divi builder for your posts if you want.

Divi has a large community following. There are multiple Facebook groups, plenty of tutorial websites, and forums at Elegant Themes’ website. If you get stuck trying to do something with Divi there’s plenty of help available any time of the day.

The Future of Divi

Elegant Themes constantly works on new features for Divi. The next version of Divi, Divi 3.0, will include new library packs, new extensions, a front-end visual editor, inline editor, and more. Divi 3.0 will be available in September (2016). I recommend getting started with Divi now and when the upgrade arrives you’ll have less to learn at once.

Buying Divi

When you buy a child theme you’re not buying Divi. You still have to buy Divi separately. It’s part of the Elegant Themes yearly subscription that includes 87 themes and support.

  • The Personal plan includes access to all Elegant Themes’ themes, perpetual updates, premium tech support, unlimited usage.
  • The Developer plan adds access to all plugins (including Bloom and Monarch – these two alone are worth the extra $20), and layered PSD files.
  • Lifetime Access gives you everything for the rest of your life for a one-time payment.

I personally recommend either the Developer plan or Lifetime Access.
